Zola
Résumé :
International audience
The aim of this paper is to present the dual-reference theory of metaphor and to apply it to a metaphorical sentence in L’Argent by Zola. The theory’s central tenet is that metaphors create new concepts and categories; theses categories then get their names from their best exemplars. We hypothesize that the theory must be complemented by paying special attention to the role of the frequency in discourse of certain lexical co-occurrences of the metaphorical term: these co-occurrences show strong participation in the process of categorization.
