Dans le martyrologe des Tragiques, la tolérance fait du discours poétique d’Aubigné sur les guerres de religion le lieu d’un voyage au cœur des croyances bibliques du réformé. En effet, dans « Les feux » comme dans « Les fers », la constance des huguenots morts pour leur foi côtoie en permanence celle du Christ sur la croix pour exhiber, exalter et revivifier le substrat culturel protestant. En faisant de ces victimes des inquisitions du XVIe siècle et de la Saint-Barthélemy les vaisseaux de la victoire de Dieu contre Satan, Aubigné met en avant un hymne à la volonté de vertu qui peut être lue comme une exhortation à avoir, face à la persécution, assez de patience et de charité pour ne pas succomber à la tentation de la haine et de la violence. La tolérance repose dans cette mesure sur la réunion d’un certain nombre de valeurs dont le monde a besoin pour abolir la violence qui le secoue souvent : la crainte de Dieu, le pardon, l’amour, la charité, le dialogue. In the martyrology of the Tragiques, tolerance makes Aubigné's poetic discourse on the wars of religion the place of a journey to the heart of the biblical beliefs of the Reformed. Indeed, in "Les feux" as in "Les fers", the constancy of the Huguenots who died for their faith permanently rubs shoulders with that of Christ on the cross to exhibit, exalt and revitalize the Protestant cultural substratum. By making these victims of the sixteenth-century inquisitions and St. Bartholomew's Day the vessels of God's victory over Satan, Aubigné puts forward a hymn to the will to virtue that can be read as an exhortation to have, in the face of persecution, enough patience and charity not to succumb to the temptation of hate and violence. Tolerance rests to this extent on the coming together of several values that the world needs to abolish the violence that often shakes it: the fear of God, forgiveness, love, charity, dialogue.
