This paper deals with the exegesis of the parable of Lazarus and the evil rich man in the 12th and 13th centuries. It aims at showing how the commentators, by accumulating sense levels, manage to combine a thorough hermeneutic research on the nature of the biblical text (first part of the paper) with a literal reading of the parable ensuring this reading will not endanger the medieval social order (second part of the paper), and with new allegorical interpretations fostering new forms of appropriation of the biblical text (third part of the paper).
