The Roman de Silence, a French text from the 13th century, became popular from 1985 onwards in feminist and gender studies in the English-speaking world. After the theories of the philosopher Judith Butler, studies on this text have proposed to analyse the performativity of the genre by the heroine successively disguised as a juggler and as a knight before regaining its initial woman’s status. As a continuation of queer studies, we here focus on the hybridity of the heroin, which mainly shows up in the guise of the juggler. We analyze how the novel contributes to trouble the identity categories of gender, sex and sexual identity. If the heroine’s hybridity is extraordinary, it also becomes a medieval marvel, allowing queer terminology to be considered in every acceptance.
