The first pages of Zola’s novel have a very particular sonorous world: a silent broken with the wind and the breathing of the mine. That creates an uncanny atmosphere which makes a very hostile setting and a man-eater mine. The film transposition changes the interpretation of the novel ; the music of the credit title takes the place of the wind, the hero is walking to Le Voreux, identified by the sound of small trucks and machines, losing its worrying appearance. The director and the scriptwriter have chosen to change the silent of the novel, preferring realism of the mine to the fantastic world of the novel.
