Even if he wrote his last play, Pentecost, in 1987, Northern Irish playwright Stewart Parker (1941-1988) was more interested in dealing with the events which had taken place in 1974 in his Province. Indeed, it was in this year, throughout Pentecost, that a loyalist workers’ strike brought down the Executive of the power-sharing government between the nationalists and the unionists. Parker considered this collapse to be “the most hopeless moment in the history of Northern Ireland”. Throughout his last play Parker writes on the Troubles, which are said to stem from religious divisions; and through this particular episode, he recalls the trauma that they engendered, the disaster, physical and psychological, they led to. Yet, he still has faith in human beings. Man, not religion, is at the origin of the conflict, and he must solve it on his own.
