The most influential theories on the aftermath of the Holocaust tend to stress that there is an absolute obscenity in the very project of understanding. Lyotard asserts that not only has the Holocaust destroyed our competence in knowing what we know; it has destroyed our security in the structures of how we know. Hence, Lanzmann will integrate in the project that led to his film Shoah the refusal of understanding as such. Thus, any artistic representation about the Holocaust belongs to a place where the necessity to break the silence meets the limits of representation. But what about how this paradoxical position is amplified when the artistic medium used belongs to the performance arts? Better yet, what kinds of questions might the theoretical working concept of trauma allow us to ask in order to illuminate the event of this particular genocide that are unrepresentable and outside the parameters of representation itself? Indeed the theatrical representation is the image of the transparency of the sign since the object on stage has clear characteristics of the object it represents, absence within its presence. I will attempt to read Charlotte Delbo’s play Qui rapportera ces paroles?, together with her essay Spectres, mes compagnons as an indication that the limits of representation is challenged by the choice of the medium of the theater in order to communicate about the goneness of the historical event. In this paper, I will argue that because Delbo’s play stages an extreme trauma – it interrogates the limits of representation and attempts to resolve it, transmitting to the spectators a trauma by proxy, a phantom pain.
