The immediate success of Cyrano de Bergerac, from the first performance of the play, took Edmond Rostand by surprise, he who expected a resounding failure. His play seems to have awakened - almost in spite of himself - a patriotic fiber aching from the defeat against Prussia and from the Dreyfus affair that had been raging for three years. However, there is a scene where a poetic-patriotic writing unfolds wonderfully, scene 3 of act IV. The bravery of the Gascons, reduced to nothing by hunger during the interminable siege of Arras, is transfigured into a melancholic feeling which will in turn be metamorphosed into a patriotic impulse. Hypotyposis, synesthesia and correspondence of the arts are married in a musical picture where Cyrano galvanizes the patriotic impulse of the Cadets of Gascony.
