The sermons of some fifteenth-century preachers are characterized by an extensive use of dramatic features that are close to those used by contemporary religious plays. The article presents the precocious and lively example of a sermon on the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man preached by Bernardino of Siena in Padua in 1423. The edition and translation of the entire sermon – transmitted by the reportatio of the notary Daniele da Porcìa – intend to provide scholars with a concrete and accessible example of the ways in which Bernardino (and other friars) dramatized biblical stories and adapted them to the catechetical and communicative goals of preaching.
