The paper questions the construction of madness in a female character in the novel La fuente enterrada by Carmen de Icaza, published in 1947, in the climax of the Francoist dictatorship. Irene’s husband decides to commit her in a psychiatric hospital and this stay in an institution raises a lot of interrogations: the definition of madness among women, the detention conditions in the 50’s in Spain, the role of men in a patriarchal society and at last the physical detention promising care or being a factor of social insanity.
