Like Ismene in the Antigone or Chrysothemis in the Electra, Tecmessa is, according to a technique loved by Sophocles, a woman close to the main hero whom she loves and would like to prevent him from acting in a way that will damage his life. As a slave, a companion and a mother, she is a unique character in the remaining plays of Sophocles. In the Ajax, Tecmessa has many dimensions. She is someone who cries at the misfortunes which are happening in the play, a narrator of the events which had taken place just before the beginning of the tragedy, a character committed to being involved in the action, a director who decides whether or not she will show Ajax covered with blood to the spectators and a moralist who stands by principles fully understandable by the public.
