Orlanda (1996), written by Jacqueline Harpman, a French Belgian author, stages many literary doubles and above all a lot of duplications. Duality is an integrant part of her fictional aesthetics and questions the notion of sexual identity and gender through, among others things, the androgynous character Orlanda. The characteristic of this novel is the co-existence of both parts of the androgyne, male and female, in distinct bodies but living in a same space-time, allowing the comparison between the two parts of the Ego. The present article intends to analyse the way Harpman deals with gender in this book and to disclose the stakes of this identity metaphor.
