With El disparo de argón (1991), the Mexican writer Juan Villoro shows how Mexico City has engulfed its peripheries and how this change has affected the lives of its inhabitants. Through numerous narrative threads, he highlights the mixture of pre-Hispanic and Spanish cultures in Mexico, all while displaying the way that the resulting mixture reacts when it is confronted with the experience of globalization and its pragmatism. Through Fernando Balmes, a character without personality who is pushed to action by the situations surrounding him, the novelist wonders about the assets and defects of old and new existential postures that present themselves to the character. Indecisive, without knowing whether it is necessary to uphold a tradition or to adhere to an excessive individualism, Fernando Balmes is commanded to say whether or not it is indispensible to act and why. This article proposes an epistemological reading of the novel and advances some interpretive lines about it.
