In several remarkable essays from the 1940’s, Hannah Arendt – starting from Max Weber’s writings, and some brilliant insights of Bernard Lazare – proposed to analyse the Jewish condition in modern Europe, particularly in Germany, as the situation of a pariah people. One could consider the minority Jewish culture in Central Europe as a sort of « pariah » culture, either conformist, or rebel. Among the « rebel pariah » Jewish intellectuals, Hannah Arendt’s friend Walter Benjamin holds a singular place, by his articulation of Romanticism with revolutionary utopias.
