In the last part of his Bellum Geticum, Claudian presents Stilico’s victory at Pollentia (April 402) as the last act of a tragedy initiated by Alaric’s hybristic desire of destroying and humiliating the Western Roman Empire, after having sacked and humiliated the Eastern Roman provinces. This dramatization of historical narrative offers an interesting epidictic way for shaping the picture of the magister militum Stilico as the true defender of Romanitas in front of barbaric assaults, and the incarnation of divine Justice defending and protecting the Roman Empire against any foreign invasion and war.
