Résumé :
This study draws a parallel between Swift’s life and Gulliver’s destiny as far as the notions of exile and banishment are concerned. In the first part, dedicated to Swift, the author quoting from The Correspondence, the Sermons, various political pamphlets, is able to show how deeply Swift resented his nomination in Ireland where, through the years, he felt he had been banished, even though he clearly distinguished between the Catholic and the Protestant lots. The second part is an analysis of Gulliver’s Travels throwing light on the diverse avatars of Gulliver’s status from expatriate to exile, to eventually a desperate “banished Yahoo”;.
