Starting with the graffiti, a particular mode of expression with its own code and rules, this article will then move on to the analysis of the interaction between writing and painting at their respective limits. The works of such American artists as Cy Twombly and Jean-Michel Basquiat help redefine the collapse of representation in its mimetic quality, by plunging the eye in the fragment. Fragments and traces exert a singular fascination which takes us to our own limits between life and death, meaning and meaninglessness, in a kind of intermediary space where the gesture only counts.
