Les énoncés que nous nous proposons d’analyser ici sont structurés de la même manière à part la préposition to : there was an oddness to the room, she had a timid side to her.
Since Benvéniste most linguists have considered that be and have are semantically related and that existentials and have-predications are two different realizations of similar semantic data. The utterances we analyse here exhibit the same structures but for the preposition to : there was an oddness to the room, she had a timid side to her. We shall see whether the various concepts forged to account for the interpretation of be and have sentences are appropriate here. The presence of to seems to question the parameters usually at work. Paradoxically enough, to posits a quality inherent in the entity and relevant in the situation. This quality is semantically constrained : it pertains to the domain of emotional or intellectual sensations.
