Résumé :
Social scientists and political activists have attributed American Exceptionalism, a perceived weakness of the American socialist movements and the lack of an American welfare state to the conservative attitudes of Americans. This approach ignores considerable polling data showing that Americans are not notably more conservative than residents of many other countries, and the significant redistributive role of the American state in transferring income from wealthier to poorer sections of the American union. The American state’s active interregional redistribution and lack of class-based welfare are explained by the nature of the American political system, the constitutional structures favoring regional politics while inhibiting alliances along lines of class.
