This article examines the connections between four interpretations of a key character in the universe of the crime film – the contract killer – by three actors of different generations. The four performances come from pictures produced in distinct film industries (Hollywood, France and Hong Kong) : Alan Ladd in This Gun for Hire (Frank Tuttle, 1942), Alain Delon in Le Samouraï (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1967), Chow Yun-fat in The Killer (John Woo, 1989), and Chow Yun-fat again in his first American picture, The Replacement Killers (Antoine Fuqua, 1998). The links between these four movies are today well-known (for instance, John Woo has often recognized Melville’s influence on his work), but the performances of the leading actors may seem very distinct from each other, ranging from Delon’s underplaying in Le Samouraï to Chow Yun-fat’s overplaying in The Killer. In spite of these apparent differences (partly due to the context in which each film was produced), a real genealogy, paradoxical but fruitful, can be traced through these four performances.
