This article examines Alan’s Wife, an early and key text of the new drama movement. The birth of a crippled child and the question of infanticide (a highly controversial subject particularly in a period that glorified the mother figure), enable the play to explore the complexities of motherhood, challenging any reductive or simplistic definition of maternity. By creating a character who refuses to repent and to plead puerperal mania, the play offers a radically new interpretation of infanticide. This analysis aims to determine in what way the staging of the ultimate crime, and of the refusal to repent, enable the dramatists to represent infanticide from a feminist perspective and to create a prototype of the New Woman. It becomes clear that Jean Creyke’s transgression lies less in the act itself than in the symbolic value of the act through which she asserts her autonomy, her right to redefine ethical values, and to question the patriarchal, logocentric discourse.
