In the context of verbal anaphora, the opposition between not and n't can be called into question. This paper demonstrates the thematic status of n't. On the one hand, not cannot reiterate n't. The repetition of negations shows a shift from not to n't, i.e. a move from a dialogal status to one which is clearly monologal. Finally, n't predominates in reported utterances. N't can therefore be identified as anaphoric negation.
