In the everyday meaning of the word, identification consists in identifying a referent – or, in other terms, in specifying the nature of an entity, of an event, etc. It is to be distinguished from identification as a marker of a relation of identity between two terms. Identity is either semantic (in which case it is part of the meaning of the utterance, as in John is Peter’s father) or meta-linguistic (i.e. is part of the linguistic mechanism, as in the case of anaphora). Several markers of identification or identity are briefly examined: be (as a copula and as an auxiliary in the be + ‑ing periphrasis), have, and the micro-system as/so.
