Ruby Cohn is professor emerita of comparative drama at the University of California, Davis. She has published widely on both English and American contemporary drama. Her many books include Modern Shakespeare Offshoots; Dialogue in American Drama; Currents in Contemporary Drama; New American Dramatists, 1960-1990; Retreats from Realism in Recent English Drama; Anglo-American Interplay in Recent Drama, together with some hundred articles on the same field. Sarah Kane, an Architect of Drama

This reading of Sarah Kane’s five plays analyses the way they divide into two radically different theatre styles, which imply two different architectures, one based on violence, the other on linguistic techniques. Blasted, Phaedra’s Love and Cleansed come under the first type of structure, with extremes of cruelty, while Crave and 4:48 Psychosis are built upon verbal devices of all kinds and appear as real word-feats, which make the drama.
