“Opening Out”: Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker from Stage to Screen

“It is usual, when a stage drama is adapted for the screen, to open it up by adding new scenes that take place outside the confined set required for most plays. This is usually done to avoid the wooden effect that is typical of plays which are filmed exactly as performed on stage, in part because dramas rely so heavily on words whereas motion pictures are essentially a visual medium.
